Mat Fund Update

Our Mat Fund is currently at $2276.22. We added $12 from water sales for August. Thanks to all of you who keep putting money in our jar.

With a goal of $3,570 we are getting closer to ordering the last of our new mats, but we’re not quite there yet. We need about $1300 more before we can order. $650 of that will be from the sale of the old mats. Students who have signed up to purchase the old mats need to see Teresa Sensei to make arrangements for payment. Together with the sale of the old mats we still need to raise about $655. To help us get there we have planned two events that we hope will make it possible for us to place the final order. The first event will be a raffle drawing and the second event will be a self-defense class for kids.

The raffle drawing will begin the week of Mon., Sep. 17 and will end on Sun., Oct. 28. Each “chance” will cost $5 or you can purchase 5 for $20. We would also like to request donations from our students and their families. If you have a product and/or a service that you would be willing to donate for our raffle please see Teresa Sensei. Any and all donations would be greatly appreciated.

The self-defense class for kids will be on Sat., Oct. 20 from 10am-12noon and will cost $20 a person or $30 a family (immediate members). Teresa Sensei will offer the class to any and all kids ages 5-13. This is not restricted to Aikido of Phoenix students, anyone can come so invite your friends, neighbors, anyone you think would be interested. The more people we get the more money we raise for the Mat Fund. Registration can be done through Sensei or online at www.AikidoOfPhoenix.com.

Roll-a-thon

It was such a success last year that we are going to do it again this year. The roll-a-thon is a fun and exciting way for the kids to practice ukemi (rolling) and help us raise money for the Mat Fund. We will count how many tumbles each student does during one class period and at the end of the week see how many were completed. Students who are interested can collect pledges for each roll or simply collect a donation. Last year over 18,000 rolls were completed by 65 students (an average of 285 rolls per student)! This year’s schedule is as follows:

  • Chandler dojo – Wed., Apr. 18
  • S. Chandler dojo – Thurs., Apr. 19
  • Mesa dojo – Fri., Apr. 20

On Friday, March 30 from 6:30 – 7:30 pm at the Mesa dojo (7550 W. Adobe Rd.) we will be presenting an Aikido demonstration to help promote and highlight the Mesa dojo’s classes. All students of AoP are invited and are welcome to participate in the demonstration. Each of our locations (Chandler, S. Chandler, Mesa) will be helping us show what Aikido is and how fun it can be for kids as well as adults. Let your Sensei know if you plan on participating. Information sheets are at each dojo.

Mat Fund Update

A huge “thank you” for everyone’s efforts in helping us raise money for the Mat Fund these past few months. We now have 10 new mats at the Chandler dojo! They look great and feel great too!

Our fundraising efforts continue…since the last newsletter the water sales alone have brought in another $57. Thanks to all who buy water and an extra thank you to all who put in a little extra when they purchase a bottle or two. With the water sales and the purchase of 10 of the old mats our Mat Fund is now at $584! If you’d like to donate water for us to sell please let Teresa Sensei know.

We have 15 mats left to replace so we will be coming up with other events in the near future to help the Mat Fund continue to grow. I am open to suggestions for ways to do this as well as help in executing the idea. See Teresa for any ideas you may have. If you are one of the people who put your name on the list to buy some of the old mats, consider paying for them now as opposed to waiting until we order again. Paying for them now will help increase the Mat Fund and we’ll be able to order sooner rather than later. Think about it and let Teresa Sensei know if you’d like to pay for your mats in the near future.
